7th Loyola: We continue to learn about proportions and how to tell if a relationship is proportional. Based on student readiness level, students will practice with unit rates, find the constant of proportionality in relationships, or graph proportional relationships from equations.
7th Chicago: We continue to practice with unit rates. We also use unit rates to compare relationships. For example, comparing unit rates at the grocery store to see which product i the better buy.
8th DePaul: We continue to investigate really big and really small numbers using scientific notation. We will start multiplying and dividing numbers written in scientific notation.
8th UIC: We finish with how to multiply and divide numbers in scientific notation. We practice translating between algebraic expressions and written English statements.

Judicial Jumpstart
Just The Beginning - A Pipeline Organization (JTB-APO) is hosting Judicial Jumpstart for middle school students (6th-8th graders) on Wednesday, November 14, 2018. Students in the Chicago area are invited to join us for a day at the Federal Court where they will have the opportunity to view a live court proceeding, interact with Federal Judges during a judges panel, and learn about the duties of a U.S. Marshall!
I'm attaching a flyer and would greatly appreciate if you could spread the word to students and parents. They can apply using the link in the flyer and I'm also including a link here.
For more information on JTB-APO programs, visit our website jtb.org and please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely,
Cristina M. Figueroa, J.D.

Math Week 9-24-18
7th Loyola: We continue to learn about proportions and how to tell if a relationship is proportional. We will spend the bulk of our time relating proportions to algebra by determining the constant of proportionality (and direct and partial variation), k, in terms of y=kx.
7th Chicago: We learn about equivalent ratios. We will use tape diagrams to determine equivalent ratios. We then focus on unit rates and how to use unit rates to compare relationships.
8th DePaul: We continue to practice with the rules of exponents: multiplying, dividing, negative powers, zero power, power to a power. We then investigate really big and really small numbers using scientific notation.
8th UIC: Then we practice with the rules of exponents: multiplying, dividing, negative powers, zero power, power to a power. We then investigate really big and really small numbers using scientific notation, as well as, how to multiply and divide numbers in scientific notation.

Math Week 9-17-18
7th Loyola: We learn about proportions and how to tell if a relationship is proportional. We also relate proportions to algebra by determining the constant of proportionality, k, in terms of y=kx.
7th Chicago: We learn about ratios and how to represent and model ratios. We then move to determining equivalent ratios.
8th DePaul: We practice with the rules of exponents: multiplying, dividing, negative powers, zero power, power to a power.
8th UIC: We finish with distinguishing between rational and irrational numbers. Then we practice with the rules of exponents: multiplying, dividing, negative powers, zero power, power to a power. Students will also review distributive property as it relates to algebraic expressions and equations.

Open House this Thursday from 4:30 to 5:30.
The Back to School Open House will be Thursday, September 13th from 4:30-5:30 pm
I will be in my room for parents to say hello, get information about mathematics in 7th/8th grade, and ask questions. There will not be formal conferences.
Administrators will be set up at tables to talk with parents on the first floor.
8th grade parents will have a DC trip meeting at 5:30---look for flyers tomorrow for further info.
Parents are welcome to attend the LSC meeting in the cafeteria at 6 pm.

Math Week 9-10-18
7th Loyola: We will begin the year learning about how proportional relationships can be modeled visually with graphs.
7th: UChicago: We begin the year with ratio and proportion. We will look at what makes something a ratio and how ratios can be expressed in many ways.
8th: UIC: We begin with polynomial expressions and how to create equivalent expressions using properties of number, number operations, and exponent rules.

Mathematics for week 9-4-18
ALL: This week we will practice with rules and routines. We will also set classroom norms and establish our vision for teaching and learning in the 2018-19 school year. Finally, we will begin our mathematics thinking using Youcubed.org's Week of Inspirational Math, which posits that anyone can learn mathematics when he/she has a growth mindset.
Check out this great video here.
