Math week 11-26-18
REMINDER: 8th grade filed trip on Monday, 11-26-18 to Dunbar. We will be back in time for students to eat lunch at Ray.
7th Loyola: Continuing again with slope and intercept. We will be graphing equations in y=mx+b form and writing y=mx+b form equations from graphs.
8th UIC: We start a unit on transformations: translations, rotations, reflections, and dilations. This week we get the vocabulary and begin with translations on the coordinate grid.
7th Loyola: Continuing again with slope and intercept. We will be graphing equations in y=mx+b form and writing y=mx+b form equations from graphs.
7th Chicago: Percents discounts an dark-ups. We have a performance task on Thursday determining the best deal on a consumer item that is available at 4 separate stores.
8th DePaul: We start a unit on transformations: translations, rotations, reflections, and dilations. This week we get the vocabulary and begin with translations on the coordinate grid.

NO SCHOOL: Monday Nov. 21-23, 2018 for Thanksgiving Break
7th Loyola: Mini-Unit using Box Plots to visualize measures of central tendency, specifically median and quartiles.
7th Chicago: Reviewing Mean, Median, Mode.
8th DePaul: Reviewing Mean, Median, Mode.

Math Week 11-12-18
NO SCHOOL: Monday Nov. 12, 2018 for Veteran's Day
NO SCHOOL for students: Wednesday Nov. 14, 2018 for Parent/Teacher conferences
7th Loyola: Mini-Unit reviewing Mean, Median, Mode. Then using Box Plots to visualize these measures of central tendency.
7th Chicago: We practice with finding the percent of a given number. We then start finding percent off. Nice video from Virtual Nerd on percent proportions.
8th DePaul: We continue looking at how to graph an equation in y=mx+b form and understand how the slope in the equation is also the slope of the graphed line.
8th UIC: Mini-Unit reviewing Mean, Median, Mode. Then using Box Plots to visualize these measures of central tendency.

Women in STEM club at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools
From the Women in STEM club:
Women in STEM club at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. WiSTEM is a nationwide program centered around women involved in STEM here in Chicago, with additional chapters in New York, Indiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
We have launched initiatives such as mentorships, professional/professor networking events, and city-wide workshops developed with other high schools to ultimately improve our views/biases on the issue and streamline more girls into STEM fields. If you would like to learn more about our mission, please a look at our website: womeninstem.org.
We are hosting an outreach event on: Saturday, December 1st. We will be hosting several science workshops and are looking for elementary school girls to come participate and get engaged. We will also have a presentation and guest speaker attending. We will follow up with more specific information and an interest form as the date approaches.
We would really appreciate it if you could encourage your female math and science students to sign up and get tickets for this event, along with teachers, if interested. Please reach out if you have any questions, and we would love to connect.
Parent Conferences Sign-Up for Homeroom 304

Math Week for 11-2-18
7th Loyola: We take what we have learned about concept of slope and continue looking at how to graph an equation in y=mx+b form and understand how the slope in the equation is also the slope of the graphed line.
7th Chicago: We practice with converting between fractions and percent. We develop a deeper understanding of percent as per 100.We start finding the percent of a given number. Nice video from Virtual Nerd on percent proportions.
8th DePaul: We take what we have learned about concept of slope and continue looking at how to graph an equation in y=mx+b form and understand how the slope in the equation is also the slope of the graphed line.
8th UIC: We continue to build and solve equations in one variable. Nice article here about why. Specifically this week we look at solving equations with a variable on both sides of the equal sign.
