Math Week 2-25-19

7th UChicago: We continue a unit on integers. We continue to practice with adding and subtracting integers. Then we start multiplying and dividing them too!

7th Loyola: We begin a unit on real world applications of area, surface, and volume of composite shapes made from circles, polygons, and their related 3D forms.

8th DePaul: We begin a geometry unit. This week we focus on the vocabulary of shapes and their parts.

8th UIC: We really break the concept down this week. It is important to learn what word mean! If we don't know the words, we don't know how to solve the tasks (or really, understand the world).

Movie Night!

Math week for 2-19-19

7th UChicago: We continue a unit on integers-- subtraction is a lie! It is really just adding the opposite.

7th Loyola: We tell the stories of functions. We practice how to qualitatively describe a function graph.

8th DePaul: We tell the stories of functions. We practice how to qualitatively describe a function graph.

8th UIC: We continue to practice with the how rate of change (slope) is seen in equations, tables, and graphs. We really practice creating equations from a graphed linear line.

No Town Hall meetings for the next 6 weeks!

Hi all,

There will be no weekly Town Hall meetings on Fridays for students for the next 6 weeks. Teachers have opted to use those minutes for more teaching and learning time. School starts at 8:45 everyday and we will be starting on time this Friday and every Friday after that!

Contact me if you have any questions or concerns!

Monday's Lockdown (2-11-19)

Ray Parents,
At roughly 12 pm, the school office was notified by CPD that students should not leave the building as they looked for an armed robbery suspect in the neighborhood.  A few minutes later, officers came to secure the building.  With their support, we did a brief full-building lockdown as a safety precaution to ensure our building was safe.  We also kept all recess indoors during that time.  By 12:45, CPD let us know that the suspects were apprehended.
We want to assure you that all students were safe during the process and remain safe.  As always, our teachers and counselors were available for any students who may have been impacted during this event.
Thank you for your support,
-Megan & Gayle

Expanding Your Horizons

Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is an annual one-day symposium for girls in grades 6-8 to learn about future career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

EYH provides middle school girls with a glimpse into the exciting world of STEM. Girls can engage in hands-on workshops led by Chicago area STEM professionals in industry and academia. Additionally, they will have an opportunity to meet female role models in STEM and get answers to any questions they have about STEM careers. During the symposium, parents and educators can also attend a specialty program to hear about ways of supporting their daughters and students in STEM careers.

Come join in!

EYH will be held on Saturday, March 30th, 2019 at the University of Illinois at Chicago east campus. Registration is now open! Stay up to date by visiting the website at https://eyhchicago.com/

Math Week 2-11-19

7th UChicago: We continue a unit on integers-- we will be adding integers to start the week and end the week with subtraction (or really, adding the opposite!).

7th Loyola: We tell the stories of functions. We look at how to qualitatively describe a function graph.

8th DePaul: We tell the stories of functions. We look at how to qualitatively describe a function graph.

8th UIC: We will practice with representing rates of change multiple ways. As a story, as a table, as a graph, and as a linear equation.

Welcome Ms. Hottel!

Kay Hottel, Student Teacher
University of Chicago
Urban Teacher Education Program

February 2019

To all 7th and 8th grade families,

Hi, my name is Kay Hottel. I am writing with much enthusiasm to inform you that I will be co-teaching with Mr. Albrecht. I am currently a graduate student in the University of Chicago’s Urban Teacher Education
Program. I am working toward a certification in K-8 education, with endorsements in Middle School Math and Social Science. Upon graduating from this program, I will become a teacher in Chicago Public Schools.
I’m originally from Kansas City, Missouri but have been in Chicago over the past eight years working and studying. I have worked in Math classrooms at the Middle and High School levels for the past three years. I spent last semester co-teaching 8th grade Math and Algebra in Edgewater. Outside of working with children, some of my interests include baking desserts and playing with my dog.
I will be working with the students in your child's class in various capacities both with small and whole group settings. I will gradually increase my responsibilities with the students over the course of the semester and lead classroom instruction for three weeks. I'm excited to work with your child this semester. Please do not hesitate to email me or stop by the classroom if you have time as I would welcome the opportunity to get to know you along with your child.

Sincerely,

Kay Hottel
