GOCPS High School Application Deadline Extended: from CPS--The pandemic has impacted every aspect of our school year, including the important process our students go through when choosing the school options that will best match their talents, interests, and abilities. So to ensure everyone has the time they need to make this important decision, we are extending the GoCPS application deadline from Friday, December 11, 2020 to Friday, January 8, 2021.

Every Monday morning I will send out a video to the students and their guardians about the project or assessment of the week. Students will be graded on participation (showing up to class), three projects, and two assessments.
Ray is a Grab and Go meal site during Remote Learning. Pick-ups are school days from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. RAY WILL NOT BE A FOOD DISTRIBUTION SITE DURING WINTER BREAK.
Students are reminded to practice Pandemic Safety Habits. There was a surge in the COVID 19 cases in Illinois in the last week.
School Forms were due By October 15. PLEASE TURN IN ASAP! They can be turned in electronically to Ms. Vergara, svergara@cps.edu or to the school at the main entrance. Copies are available there.
WEEKLY MATH UPDATES
Our main focus is still connecting with students, getting to know each other, and learning how to use the technology that will facilitate our learning. We know there will still be challenges, glitches, and frustrations this week. That’s okay! We will be forgiving, patient, and flexible and hope you will do the same. 7th grade will continue a unit on circles. We review the relationship between circumference, diameter, and radius. We will continue to look at a deeper meaning of what it means to measure area and how that meaning applies to the measuring of the area of a circle. Performance task Wednesday.
7.G.ADraw, construct, and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationships between them.
7.G.B.4Know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle and use them to solve problems; give an informal derivation of the relationship between the circumference and area of a circle.
8th grade Students continue to conceptually understand slope. We will look at more ways to see how steepness is defined by both the horizontal and vertical change of a line. Students will be finding the slope from a graph. We will also begging to define the kinds of slope Performance task on Wednesday.
8.EE.B.6 Use similar triangles to explain why the slope is the same between any two distinct points on a non-vertical line in the coordinate plane; derive the equation y = mx for a line through the origin and the equation y = mx + b for a line intercepting the vertical axis at b.
Students will continue to use Khan Academy for individual/asynchronous learning.
ALGEBRA
Students will start the week reviewing the x-intercept and the y-intercept of a line and then using graphs and equations to find the intercepts. We will then connect the importance of knowing an intercept can help us define the relationship described by an equation or graph better. Knowing intercepts will help us also describe the relationship itself better. We will then formally look at the slope-intercept form of equations (y=mx+b). Short quiz on Thursday.
SI-D Interpret the slope (rate of change) and the intercept (constant term) of a linear model in the context of the data.
Help Ms. Welber: Recording Permission Form
As you know, Ms. Welber is co-teaching our class for the first half of this year. As part of Ms. Welber’s student teaching, she will need to record some lessons, either to share with her professors, or to submit to the state board for certification. In order to do that, we need permission from the parents/guardians of every student in the class. Please fill out this form: English Spanish to tell us if you give your permission or not. There is more information on the form as well about the recordings. This is the same form that Mrs. Johnson-Finner will send out for Mr. Watkins in her class, so you only need to fill it out once. If you already filled it out for Mrs. Johnson-Finner, you are all set!

STUDENT EMAIL: Students and families must be able to access their student’s email. Need help or logging in for the first time: Go Here. The student CPS email is the access to Google Classroom for assignments and information, to Google Meet to attend class remotely, and to Aspen Student Portal for grades.
Weekly Individual/Asynchronous Assignments: 5 assignments in Khan Academy. Due each Friday by 11:59 p.m. Check Google Classroom this and for other weekly assignments.
Google Classroom Links: Currently Google Classrooms are being pushed out to students through the CPS Aspen system. Students and families can use the student’s CPS email to access their Google Classrooms.
Curriculum and unit overviews: Open-Up-- This is the launch page. Choose your role as parent and 7th or 8th grade to see an overview of every unit and lesson for the whole year.
Grades: Starting September 8, 2020 CPS will return to regular grading practices, as the district will ensure all students have the tools they need to succeed. Grading scale.
Office Hours: School days from 2:10 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. We will use this time to connect with students and families. We will have scheduled appointments as well as open times. We will use Google JamBoard and Google Hangouts Chat for one-on-one meetings. We will also schedule some small group sessions and meet using Google Meet. This is our last week of school for 2020, and it'll be a busy one.
Starting with our winter spirit week celebration.
Monday is creative background day. Students can electronically change their background screen or explore their artistic skills and create their own.
Thursday is a game day celebration for our on-track students in grades 3-8th.
Friday is a school-wide Ray Love celebration for all students, and just in time for the holidays, progress reports will be mailed by the district.
Please refer to teacher websites and the PTO e news, which will detail all days this week.
Over winter break, Ray will not be a food distribution site. Open sites will be announced on cps.edu website.
Whether it's virtually or in person, I can't wait to see your students in 2021.
