Math Week 1-30-17
Hello all!
First off, this week the 7th and 8th graders at Ray start a partnership with The Revival (Hyde Parks' improv theater). Through a generous grant that Ray won from Ingenuity, we are starting an arts integration project where we are combining the process and practice of theater/improv with the mathematical practice standards. This first week will feel very much like a theater class as students get comfortable with performing, ensemble, and the "yes and..." philosophy. In the coming weeks we will start explicitly connecting the theater/improv thinking with math thinking. Jeff Gandy from The Revival will be co-teaching with me Mondays and Wednesdays for the next 12 weeks.
Second, the 2nd quarter ends this week. All outstanding or missing assignments need to be in by the 3:45, Tuesday, 1-31-17.
Last, 7th grade starts a unit on area. The standard for 7th graders is that they can find area and surface area of any composite shape, including shapes involving circles. Great video to review what area is:

8th grade continues with y=mx+b. Mr. A will show how we can use an understanding of linear algebra to think about any thing that can be measured.

Mat Week 1-23-17
Hello all!
7th continues exploring angles and angle relationships. We really look at triangles and how to classify triangles based on their attributes. Here is a good example of the tasks students will be solving.

Also: here is a game students can play to practice with angle tasks: Tank Attack!
8th grade will practice with y=mx+b (Slope-intercept form!!). A solid place to review and practice is linked here: MATH IS FUN!

Math Week 1-16-17
Hello all,
I hope you had a productive Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day! This week in math we will continue with Choice Board (ask students about this parents!) and thinking geometrically.
7th grade will begin a unit on angles and angle relationships. Key vocabulary this week is supplementary angles and complementary angles.
8th graders finish Pythagorean Theorem at the start of the week and then return to thinking about slope at the end of the week. We specifically will look at slope-intercept form of linear equations (y=mx+b).

Free Math Tutoring @Ray!
Dear Students/Parents/Guardian,
The UChicago volunteers will be back for mathematics tutoring in January. We will start again on Wednesday, January 11, 2017. Tutoring will then be M/W/F in room 304 from 3:50 to 4:45. Students are to report to tutoring immediately after school and may not leave the building and return. Students who leave the building will not be admitted back in for tutoring. Late students will be asked to contact a parent to come pick them up and will not be allowed into future tutoring sessions. This is a free tutoring program and will run until the UChicago students go on break at a date TBA. Students do not need to attend all three days each week. Please get a permission slip from Mr. Albrecht if you would like your student to attend. Please email Mr. Albrecht (lalbrecht@cps.edu) if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Mr. Albrecht
Free Tutoring at University Church
Free Community Tutoring @ University Church via Maroon Tutor Match
Maroon Tutor Match will continue to provide a free tutoring space through their partnership with the University Church (5655 S. University Ave) on Wednesdays and Thursdays fro 4-6pm. Tutors will be in the University Church Library (next to Fabiana’s Café). Students will be able to receive tutoring support for one hour per day. Maroon Match Spaces work on a drop-in, first come/first served basis. For more information email: maroontutormatch@gmail.com

Happy New Year!
7th: This upcoming week the 7th graders will be finishing up their learning of integer operations with multiplication and division. They will also create and solve tasks that use integers in real-world situations. We also will be finishing up NWEA testing for our middle of the year benchmark.
8th: The 8th graders will start a short unit on Pythagorean Theorem! This is a very old mathematics concept dating back to the ancient Egyptians! We also will be finishing up NWEA testing for our middle of the year benchmark.
