WEEKLY MATH UPDATES

7th: We will continue a unit on Proportional Reasoning.  This week will look at using data tables to create proportional equations in y=kx form. We will then graph proportional relationships and show that their graphs create straight lines through the origin.

  • 7.RP.A.2.c Represent proportional relationships by equations. For example, if total cost y is proportional to the number x of items purchased at a constant price k, the relationship between the total cost and the number of items can be expressed as y=kx .

  • 7.RP.A.2.a Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin

8th: This week we use our understanding of transformations--including dilations-- to learn about similar figures. We will prove that two figures are similar using transformations as well as side lengths, angle measures, and side ratio relationships. This will lead into algebra and a geometric proof of slope.

  • 8.G.A.4Understand that a two-dimensional figure is similar to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations; given two similar two-dimensional figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the similarity between them.
