Southside Scribblers Out of the Box 2021 Programming Registration Form
Southside Scribblers is a free after-school creative writing class taught by University of Chicago students on Friday afternoons from 4-5 PM. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are changing our class format to center around prompt boxes with designated programming based on students' interests and ages. This program will continue for students until the end of the year due to the individualized nature of this programming, with a week off for University students' spring breaks or any days off for Ray Elementary (NO PROMPT BOXES FROM MARCH 21st-29th).

WEEKLY MATH UPDATES
Our main focus is still connecting with students, getting to know each other, and learning how to use the technology that will facilitate our learning. We know there will still be challenges, glitches, and frustrations this week. That’s okay! We will be forgiving, patient, and flexible and hope you will do the same. For immediate tech help try the CPS Online Reopening Guide support page.
7th grade We will continue analyzing our collected bird data from the Great Backyard Bird Count--this week we will compare each class’s data to the data of 7th/8th grade as a whole. Also-we will continue to study integers (positive and negative numbers and zero!) We will continue to learn the rules and practice with multiplying and dividing integers--quiz Friday!
7.NS.A.1 Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.
7.NS.A.2.aUnderstand that multiplication is extended from fractions to rational numbers by requiring that operations continue to satisfy the properties of operations, particularly the distributive property, leading to products such as -1*-1=1and the rules for multiplying signed numbers.
8th grade We will continue analyzing our collected bird data from the Great Backyard Bird Count--this week we will compare each class’s data to the data of 7th/8th grade as a whole. We also continue to represent the rate of change in a linear relationship in graph, table, or equation form. Students will have a performance task to show their understanding of this on Thursday.
8.EE.BUnderstand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations.
Students will continue to use Khan Academy for individual/asynchronous learning.
ALGEBRA
We have begun studying functions. This week will look at what makes a relationship a function, the vertical line test, function notation, and hopefully start qualitatively describing functions.
Also be on the lookout for emails updating what could be daily changes to the algebra schedule. I thank students and families for being patient and flexible with me as we all navigate the CPS reopening plan for Ray. We will keep our algebra time at 3:30 until hybrid learning begins on March 8.
