Math Week 3-19-18

7th grade: We finish our unit on angle relationships. Great video below that conceptually explains angles.

8th: We finish our studies of area and volume. This week we look at area of spheres, cones, and cylinders. Test Friday: Click here for a great problem to study.

Also videos explaining where the formulas for cones and spheres derive from:

Math Week 3-12-18

7th Grade: Students will study angle relationships. Students should know how to find missing angle measures based on knowing vertical angles, complementary angles, supplementary angles, and adjacent angles.

8th grade: Students will continue to practice with surface area and nets. We will move onto volume (we will study this using popcorn!) of prisms and cylinders. Next week: volume of spheres and cones.

Expanding Your Horizons conference in Chicago on March 24, 2018!

Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a national network that hosts one-day conferences to encourage young women to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. Through locally-organized EYH Network programs, the EYH program provides STEM role models and hands-on activities for middle and high school girls. The ultimate goal is to motivate girls to become innovative and creative thinkers ready to meet 21st century challenges!

Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics™ conferences nurture girls’ interest in science and math to encourage them to consider careers in STEM. Conferences are held all over the United States for middle and high school girls, and we are excited to be hosting our next Expanding Your Horizons conference in Chicago on March 24, 2018!

At the conference, girls can pick from a series of hands-on workshops to attend, including topics such as food science, biomedical engineering, and particle physics. The students will have a great time learning about new careers and participating in hands-on activities. The workshops will be led by female professionals from a wide variety of STEM careers. Workshop leaders are eager for the students to have a positive experience and will gladly answer any questions about what they do and how they prepared for their careers. This is a wonderful opportunity for your students to gain hands-on exposure to a variety of STEM careers and meet great role models.

All girls in grades 6-8 are welcome at the conference, so please help us spread the word!
Registration for the conference will begin in February (more details will be available later).

The registration fee will be $5 per girl.
Financial assistance is available for those who need it.

Registration is open for Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Chicago’s annual conference! We are excited to invite girls in grades 6-8 and their parents to join us at the University of Chicago on Saturday, March 24th, 2018.

Math Week 3-5-18

7th: We continue with probability. We will practice with the using our new understanding of probability to analyze games of chance. We will have a mini games-of-chance carnival on Wednesday during class. Friday we leave our study of probability and learn about angles, which are the amount of circular space between two rays.

8th: We will review area (Slideshow Project will be assigned Tuesday) to start the week. We will end the week surface area and nets of geometric solids.
