Homework Update!

ALL: (DUE: 11-5-16) 6000 more math points earned on Khan Academy between 10-30-16 and the end of the day on 11-5-16!

7th:(Due 11-3-16)
Find something that you can quantify in your daily life. Measure or count your chosen thing on Monday or Tuesday. Measure or count the chosen thing again on Wednesday. Determine the percent change between the first day you measure and the second day you measure. Examples of things to count:
  • How many people at your lunch table brought their lunch?
  • How many cars are parked on your block when you get home from school?
  • How many political commercials did you see on TV?
  • How cold is it when you leave for school?
  • Literally, anything that can be counted or measured?

8th: (Due 11-3-16)
Create a new foldable (definition and example please) or the math vocabulary listed below:

1. Expression
2. Equation
3. Coefficient
4. Term
5. Like terms

Math Week 10-31-16

7th grade: We continue to think about percents as a special proportional relationship. We have recently spent time talking about how people really like using percent to determine how much money will be saved or earned or charged. This week we spend looking at the idea of percent change. When people talk about increases and decreases we like to talk about them in terms of percent of increase or decrease-- in effect, telling how much a given measurable situation has proportionally changed.

8th grade: We spent last week on the concept of slope as rate of change. This is a building block for students to learn about the language of algebra and how we use that language to understand the world through relationships and patterns. This week we begin to study the symbolic language of expressions and equations as way to describe those relationships and patterns. We specifically focus on the concept of "like terms". Over the next few months we will continue to learn how these blocks and others like them come together as a mathematics literacy that helps us make meaning of our world.

Math Week 10-24-16

7th: The seventh graders will focus on learning about percents. We will start with a review on the meaning of percent and how to represent percent in visual models and mathematically. We will then solve tasks finding percent of, percent off (sales), and percent on (tips and tax).

Here's a practice game: http://www.mathplayground.com/Decention/Decention.html

8th: We will begin to explore the concept of slope and how it is related to the idea of rate of change. Students will be able to identify positive, negative, zero, and undefined slopes in a linear graph. Students will be able to find the slope from a linear graph.

Volleyballs Needed for Our Warriors--a message from Ms. Ip

FOLLOW THIS LINK TO HELP: https://www.donorschoose.org/project/volleyballs-needed-for-our-warriors/2286601/?challengeid=20665678

My students need volleyballs for practice so they can work on their basic skills in bumping, setting, and hitting.

My Students

This is the second year that our school has a volleyball team. Last year, we had nine players on our 7th/8th grade team, and we survived practice with only six balls during the whole season. Almost all of our players are new to the sport, but we have heard that a few of them have gone on to play volleyball in high school after graduation. Starting this second year, we have more forty students who tried out for the team, and currently about 24 players remain for both the 5th/6th team and 7th/8th team.
Our players work hard during practice and in the games.
They are positive and encouraging towards their teammates even though we only have a small gym to practice. Many students are new to the sport, but they have been making progress due to their hard work and dedication. If anything, we are a team that cares for each other and grow together.

Week 10-17-16

Hello!

Here is what will be going on in the classroom this week...

1. 7th Graders on Monday had a performance task where they looked at paintings from some of the worlds best artists and checked to see if the painting was proportional. The rest of the week will be focused on real world applications of proportions. The class will then shift our focus over to finding the constant in a table and graph.

2. 8th Graders will be reviewing ratios and proportions, as well as looking at graphs and tables to find the constant or unit rate. This will set us up to learn about different types of graphs, slope and how to find a linear equation looking at the graph.

PICTURE DAY!!

Reminder: picture day is tomorrow, 10-17-16!

Homework for the week of 10-17-16

ALL: (DUE: 10-22-16) 6000 more math points earned on Khan Academy between 10-17-16 and the end of the day on 10-22-16!

8th Grade: (DUE: 10-20-16) Worksheet on Graphs of Proportional Relationships

7th Grade: (Due: 10-21-16) Picture Sort on Proportions vs Non-Proportions. Directions: Cut out the different charts, graphs, words and equations. Check and see if they are proportional, then glue them to the other sheet of paper that is split. One side says Proportional and the other Non-Proportional. Decide if that piece is proportional or not and glue it to the side you choose.

8th Grade Stations 10-13-16

Reminder that there is a TEST TOMORROW! All the information found in these activities will be on the test. Great study tool!

Follow this list of activities:

In addition to scientific notation, there will be some exponent rules on the test.

Math Week 10-10-16

Welcome back after that 3 day weekend!

Here is what will be going on in the classroom this week...

1. 7th Graders will continue working on Proportional Reasoning and the different ways you can show something is proportional. There will be a Quiz on Thursday. This Quiz grade will override the previous quiz grade if the student performs higher on this quiz.

2. 8th Graders will continue to work with exponents and the different rules of simplifying exponential numbers. We will learn more about scientific notation and how to multiply and divide numbers in scientific notation. There will be a test over exponents and scientific notation.
