Math Week 9-28-15

7th Grade: We will continue working with ratio and proportion. Specifically this week we will use unit rates to compare rates expressed in different units. For example, which is a better deal for milk if one costs $3 a gallon and another costs $2 of a pack of 3 quart boxes. We will then practice finding unit rates when one of the quantities is a fractional amount. Last we will start using unit rate to convert between measurement units (example: feet to yards, gallons to quarts, meters to centimeters, etc.).

7.RP.A.1 Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units.

Here is a fun video about unit rates:

8th Grade: Last week most students did very well learning about rational vs. irrational numbers! This week we will start a three-week unit on exponents and how exponents are used in solving tasks in algebra.

8.EE.A.1 Know and apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical expressions.

Here is the first Khan Academy video about exponents:

Math Week 9-21-15

7th Grade: We will start a unit on Ratio and Proportion and using them to solve real-world and mathematical problems. In Grade 7, students extend their reasoning about ratios and proportional relationships in several ways. Students use ratios in cases in that involve pairs of rational number entries, and they compute associated unit rates. They identify these unit rates in representations of proportional relationships.

7.RP.A.2 Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities.
7.RP.A.1 Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units.

8th grade: We do a smaller week-long unit on the difference between rational and irrational numbers. We will also learn how repeating decimals convert to a ratio of two integers (fractions).

8.NS.1 Know that numbers that are not rational are called irrational. Understand informally that every number has a decimal expansion; for rational numbers show that the decimal expansion repeats eventually, and convert a decimal expansion, which repeats eventually into a rational number

Math Week of 9-14-15

This week in math--for 7th and 8th grade--we will be kicking off the year with the Week of Inspirational Math from the folks at youcubed.org out of Stanford University.

This week is about inspiring students through open, beautiful and creative math. We have chosen the different tasks so that students see math as a broad, interesting and visual subject that involves deep thinking. Students will learn important growth mindset messages that will help them feel confident, try harder all year, persist with open and difficult problems and embrace mistakes and challenge. All tasks are low floor and high ceiling – they are accessible to all students and they extend to high levels. All the lessons this week will also focus on developing the CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practice as part of the everyday problem solving abilities for our students.
