and

7th grade HOMEROOM 304

Mr. Albrecht (lalbrecht@cps.edu)

Hello all,

  1. IMPORTANT IAR TESTING INFORMATION FOR THIS WEEK:

THIS DOES NOT APPLY FOR MR. PARANJAPE’S HOMEROOM

Dear Ray seventh and eighth grade students and families,

Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) testing continues this week on Tuesday, May 18, 2021. To accommodate both in-person and remote student testing we will have changes to our regular schedule on Tuesday-May18. Students who attend in-person will test with their homeroom teachers. Students who are remote learners should have received a communication from the school about when they are scheduled to come to Ray for IAR testing. Remote learner families should contact our school counselor and test coordinator Ms. Nieto (snieto15@cps.edu ) if they have not received information about when their students are scheduled to test.

In-person learners schedule for May 18

Students will be taking two tests each day. The first test will be after specials classes and the second test will be after lunch and recess. Students will not have regularly scheduled classes. Students will test with their homeroom teachers with exceptions for students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs). Teachers will provide asynchronous assignments for students to complete for when testing is over for the day.

We will do the last two units of the English/language arts (ELA) sections on Tuesday, May 18.

Remote learners schedule for May 18

Remote learners will not be able to attend all of their classes on May 18 as teachers will be administering IAR tests to in-person learners. Remote students should attend Google Meets only for their homeroom, specials and English/language arts (ELA) classes on this day. Students will receive asynchronous assignments from their other teachers to complete on Tuesday, May 18..

Remote learner IAR testing began on Tuesday, May 11. Remote learners should come to Ray to take their IAR tests at their scheduled time. Remote students scheduled for testing on May 18 should come to Ray for testing as scheduled.

Best,

Ray 7th and 8th grade team

  1. CPS schools and facilities will continue to follow Chicago's mask mandate

Earlier this week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated public health guidance to allow vaccinated individuals to not wear masks indoors under certain conditions. However, CPS will adhere to the state and city's guidance for schools to continue to follow the CDC’s Operational Strategy for K-12 Schools, which continues to recommend universal masking, until more teachers and children are vaccinated. We will continue to work closely with the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) and will provide an update should there be a modification to the city's public health guidance.

  1. COVID 19 Vaccine info from CPS

Expanding Vaccine Access for Students 12 and Up

With the approval of the Pfizer vaccine for children ages 12-15, thousands more CPS students can now be protected from COVID-19. Vaccinations are the key to returning to normalcy, and we want to help make that process as easy as possible.

Vaccination Bus at Ray for any Chicago students and parents on May 22 & June 12th

  • The vaccination event is open to all Chicagoans 12 and older! There is no cost, and no identification is needed.

  • Students who are under 18 will need to have a parent or guardian present with them on-site to provide consent for the vaccination - the vaccinators will confirm this before administering the vaccine, but it will be important to ensure that information is clear to students and their families as we advertise the event

  • The vaccination bus will offer both the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, a one-dose vaccine for individuals 18 and older, and the Pfizer vaccine, a two-dose vaccine for individuals 12 and older.

  • If you would like to volunteer for this event or work in the building on one of these Saturdays, please let me know.

COVID-19 vaccines are free of charge to everyone, regardless of their immigration or health insurance status. For more information on these vaccines, talk with your healthcare provider or visit https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/index.html.You can also call the Chicago Department of Public Health at (312)746-4835.

WEEKLY MATH UPDATES

Our main focus is still connecting with students. We know there will still be challenges, glitches, and frustrations every week. That’s okay! We will be forgiving, patient, and flexible and hope you will do the same.

7th grade

We will begin a unit on probability. We will start with the language of probability. Probability is all about likelihood. Probability is measured between 0 and 1, or 0 and 100%. The closer the probability is to 0 the more unlikely the event will happen. The closer to 1, the more likely. Events that are 0% are impossible. Events that are 100% are certain.

  • 7.SP.C.5 Understand that the probability of a chance event is a number between 0 and 1 that expresses the likelihood of the event occurring. Larger numbers indicate greater likelihood. A probability near 0 indicates an unlikely event, a probability around 1/2 indicates an event that is neither unlikely nor likely, and a probability near 1 indicates a likely event.

8th grade

Eighth graders continue to solve equations. We will have a test on solving two-step equations on Monday, 5-17-21. Then on Thursday we will begin exploring the Pythagorean Theorem!

  • 8.EE.C Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations.

  • 8.G.B.6 Explain a proof of the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse.

All students:

Students will continue to use Khan Academy for individual/asynchronous learning.

ALGEBRA--

In preparation for the Algebra Exit Exam we will do a practice test session this coming Monday, May 17, 2021. The test will be done remotely and is 2 hours in length. To accommodate the long test session, I will move the start time of class to 4:00 p.m. for the practice test so that we can be done by 6:00 p.m. I hope students can stay for the whole practice test session. I understand if they cannot. We will have regular scheduled algebra classes the rest of the week and start looking at the practice exam questions to prepare for June 14.
